The right contractor makes a project smooth; the wrong one makes it stressful and expensive. Before you sign anything, ask these six questions.
1. Are you licensed and insured?
This is non-negotiable. A licensed, insured contractor protects you if something goes wrong. Always confirm it, and ask to see proof.
2. Have you done work like mine before?
Renovations, commercial buildouts, and low-voltage work all take different expertise. Ask for relevant examples, and look at the contractor's project photos.
3. Who is actually doing the work?
Will it be in-house crews or subcontractors? A contractor who self-performs more trades usually means tighter coordination and fewer surprises.
4. What is the timeline?
A good contractor can give you a realistic schedule and explain what could change it. Vague answers are a red flag.
5. How do you handle changes?
Projects evolve. Ask how change orders and added costs are documented so there are no surprises on the final bill.
6. Can I see the quote in writing?
A clear, written quote that lists scope and inclusions protects both sides. Insist on it before work begins.
